The next steps...
Update - March 31, 2025
Today, we had the opportunity to meet with Tasmania’s Attorney General, Guy Barnett to discuss our fight for Khaylan’s Law and stronger legal protections for vulnerable children. Mr. Barnett expressed his deep condolences for what has happened and made it clear that he is taking these issues seriously.
He has already begun exploring the legislative differences in other states to compare how similar cases are handled and has identified areas where change may be needed in Tasmania. Importantly, he hopes to recommend us to the Sentencing Advisory Council to arrange a meeting where we can further discuss our proposed legal reforms. We do understand that this will be an ongoing process, and may take some time.
Mr. Barnett was genuinely interested in hearing our story, not only about the pursuit of justice for Khaylan but also about how our family is coping. He acknowledged Logan’s wellbeing and the impact this has had on our lives, and commended Maddy for how well she has continued to fight and get by day by day.
We greatly appreciate the consideration he has given us today.
This is an important step forward, and we will continue pushing for real change. Thank you to everyone supporting this fight – we are being heard.
Additionally, today after months of dedication and important conversations, we are proud to finally launch the petition for Khaylan’s Law. This is a vital step toward ensuring stronger protections for children and fairer justice for victims of fatal child abuse.
With growing support, we have hope that real change is possible—but we need your voices to make it happen.

After months of delays and multiple sentencing adjournments, we finally stood in court on February 27, 2025, waiting for the justice Khaylan deserved. We had hoped the sentence would reflect the gravity of the loss, but instead, we were left feeling devastated—justice had not been served. Daniel John Ridgers was sentenced to just six years in prison, with the possibility of parole after three years. To make it even more heartbreaking, his sentence was backdated to December 2023, meaning he will be eligible for parole as early as December 2026. No child’s life should be treated as anything less than precious, and no family should have to endure this kind of pain.
But this is not where Khaylan’s story ends. Instead of accepting this outcome, we are taking the first steps toward Khaylan’s Law—a push for stronger legal consequences for those who take the lives of innocent children. Our journey will begin with exploring the legal processes required for law reform, reaching out to legal experts, and connecting with other advocates who have fought for legislative reform. We will also be gathering community support, launching petitions, and making our voices heard by those in power.
We know this will not be an easy fight, but we refuse to let Khaylan’s death be in vain. If anyone can offer support, advice, or guidance, please contact us. Your help will be deeply appreciated as we move forward with this important cause. Follow our journey as we take the first steps toward real change.
